"What Separates Us" is an independent film produced by Interwoven Studios and Running Bear Media with the support from the Montana Film Office. It's a coming-of-age drama following a young man (Daniel) navigating identity and loyalty to his past within the constraints of small-town life. As his personal relationships deepen when he meets an artist (Parker) at a local college, the film explores the tension between remaining rooted in familiarity and risking change in pursuit of self-definition.
I portray Professor Laura Heller, a newly arrived professor to Montana from the East Coast whose direct presence and intellectual sharpness introduce contrast within the rural college classroom. Her recognition of untapped potential in one of her students, Parker, places her at the intersection of guidance and confrontation, offering a stable voice amid an increasingly unstable emotional landscape with Daniel.
It screened at the Northwest Makers Film Festival, Machetanz Film Festival, Flathead Lake International Cinemafest, and Glennfest Film Festival.
What Separates Us received multiple honors, including Best Feature at the Machetanz Film Festival in Alaska, as well as Best Actor, Honorable Mention – Best Director, and Honorable Mention – Best Feature at the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest. The film also held regional screenings in Helena, Missoula, and Butte, where it was met with strong audience engagement.
